A drum with a twisted spectrum

Kac asked whether you can hear the shape of a drum. Click the square: it rings with the true partials of this surface, f ∝ √(4m²+k²). The twisted seam censors half the torus’s modes and admits others — same square, different chord. The ripples are the actual sum of the ringing modes.

This little square is the whole site in miniature: blue edges glue straight, red edges glue with a flip. The letter crosses a red edge and returns as its mirror image — and its path slowly weaves the square, blue strands walked right-handed, red mirrored. The twist is the mechanic

Steering is the snake’s own left and right — and the snake is chiral. Cross the red seam and it returns mirrored, so your left turns bend right on screen until you cross again. Eating strikes the drum at that point. Arrow keys or A/D while playing; Escape pauses.
